Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.

ALS is sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the baseball player who was diagnosed with it.

ALS often begins with muscle twitching and weakness in a limb, or slurred speech. As the disease progresses, ALS affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe.

As the disease progresses, ALS causes complications, such as problems with eating, speaking or breathing. Some people with ALS have problems with memory and decision-making, which may be due to a form of dementia.

Research is ongoing into potential causes of ALS. It is estimated that 5 to 10% of cases may inherited, and the disease may be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors such as smoking and exposure to toxic chemicals.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is difficult to diagnose early because symptoms can be like those of other neurological diseases. Tests to rule out other conditions might include:

Research is ongoing into new medications and treatments but currently there is no cure for this progressive disease.
